BECOME A

MENTOR

Want to make a difference?

Mentoring guarantees young people that there is someone who cares about them, assures them they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges, and makes them feel like they matter.

Research confirms that quality mentoring relationships are linked to improved academic, social and economic prospects.

One in three young people will grow up without this critical asset.

For those who are mentoring, the relationship can build leadership and management skills, expand a mentor’s professional network, and provide an empowering opportunity to give back to the community.

So, how does it work?

  • Who can become a Mentor?

Our Mentors are adults 18+ who can commit to at least four hours per month in-person with their Mentee for at least one year. Potential Mentors must complete the entire application process which includes an interview, comprehensive background screening, reference check, and online training. They must have a valid drivers license with current auto insurance.

Mentors from ALL backgrounds are needed, but there is a great need for men, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ folks.

  • What is the role of a Mentor?

    A Mentor will:

Put the safety and well-being of their Mentee first at all times.

    Be dependable, consistent, and patient.

    Be a good friend.

    Focus on fun!

  • How many hours does Mentoring require?

Mentors are required to spend a minimum of four hours in person per month with their Mentee. You will work together with your Mentee’s caregiver to determine what schedule works best for everyone.

Research has shown that a mentoring relationships are most beneficial when they are long-term, which is why we ask that Mentors make a commitment of at least one year.

  • What will I do with my Mentee?

You will spent quality time building a trusting relationship with your Mentee. You will also help them get out into the community and experience new things.

Cook a meal together, visit your local library, attend a sports game. The sky is the limit!

Mentors are expected to share in the cost of activities, and it is recommended to keep activities free or low cost. Our Mentor Resources page has many ideas for local activities and events for you and your Mentee.

  • What if the connection between me & my mentee does not work?

We work really hard at making a good match. We interview the family, the Mentee, and referral source - but we are not always right. If you feel at any time that your connection is not working, contact your Program Coordinator and they will assist you in finding the right match.

  • Who will guide me through the process?

Once you are matched with a Mentee, you will receive monthly check-ins from you Program Coordinator. You can reach out to them at any point by phone or email for support or guidance.

  • Do I have to be a One to One Mentor or can I just volunteer?

Yes, you can volunteer and not be matched with a Mentee. If you wish to volunteer instead, you must complete the same steps as becoming a mentor. Volunteers are also required to commit to at least four hours per month.

  • Non-Discrimination Policy

Our participants come to us with a wide range of personal characteristics.

It is our goal to create a society where every young person has a web of supportive adults available to them as they form their identities, achieve their dreams, and reach their goals. Mentor Testimonials

  • "This experience has taught me that a lot of the times you think you’re changing and helping someone but at the end of the day these magnificent children are changing us. I am thankful everyday to be apart of my mentee’s life and for her outgoing silly personality. Everyday is an adventure when she is around!"

    Taylor Greaves, Mentor

  • "Being a mentor has taken me out of my day to day and reminded me that not everyone is in the same boat. It's such a joy to experience many 'firsts' with my mentee."

    Anonymous, Mentor

  • "I learned a lot about myself and that even the seemingly smallest things can have a huge impact on a kid and make their whole day!"
